ADDITION FACT FAMILIES
In class we will soon be working on addition problems. As an incentive for the children, we will be learning the different addition fact families from 1-10 (i.e.: 1+1, 1+2, 1+3, then 2+1, 2+2, 2+3. etc). Just like our Rainbow Words Reading Program, the children will have the opportunity to internalize the different ways we add and will hopefully do it quick and fast within their heads. For each fact family we learn in class, I will give an addition test for that particular number. Once your child has passed the test, he/she will receive a colored sticker to place inside of a paper gum ball machine on our math bulletin board. It will tally his/her progress throughout the rest of the year. If your child passes all of the fact families, he/she will receive a reward for their achievement. They have the entire rest of the year to do so. Some children will pass quicker than others, but all children will have the same opportunity. If, per chance, your child does not pass their test on the first try, he/she will have other chances to do so (just like our rainbow words).
We will begin doing addition most likely in November and will then progress to taking the addition fact family tests. I will not be sending home flash cards, but I will have available links to download your own at home and print them out. The children are also encouraged to practice each night for a few minutes to help internalize the numbers. I will inform you of when a test will be coming up.
Below is the link for the fact family flashcards. Every 7-10 days I will test on the next fact family. If your child has not passed the first test or current test, they will keep taking that until they pass.
In addition to this, all four kindergarten classes will participate in a math-a-thon at the end of the year. With these practice tests and individual incentives, it makes the math-a-thon competition more competitive and exciting!
